Amelia Philp was one of Rhonnies matrilineal great great grandmothers. Her father was Roger Philp. The origins of the Philp family name are the same as those for Phillips.
Roger Philp was born in 1791 in the village of Lerryn, near St Winnow, Cornwall, England. He worked as an agricultural labourer in the district and married Ann from the same village sometime around 1812. We are not sure how many children they had but we are aware of five that are relevant to our story and they were Jonathan b1822, Amelia b1826, Charles b1830, Mary Ann b1832 and Elizabeth b1835.
The village of Lerryn was 20 km from Liskeard, the largest town in the district, which was adjacent to the village of Menheniot, where there were lead mines. Some of the Philp family had moved to this area to work in the mines. This may have been a reason for Amelia to have been in the area, when she met Samuel Rowe, a local lead miner.
Samuel and Amelia eventually married in 1848 and her story will continue as Amelia Rowe.
