Mary Smart was Tony’s matrilineal great great grandmother.

At 10 years of age in 1841, Mary Smart was living with Mary Woodley, 80 years, in Saffron Walden, her matrilineal grandmother. Mary Woodley had originally married into the Woodley family from the village of Littlebury, just North-west of Saffron Walden and moved to Saffrom Walden after her husband had died.

Mary Smart was born on the 6th October 1830 and baptised in March the following year; all in Saffron Walden, Essex. Mary was the daughter of William Smart b1783 and Amelia Woodley b1787. William and Amelia had married in 1812 at Saffron Walden, where they had continued living. Amelia was born in Saffron Walden but William was born in Debden, about 3kms to the South. For details of the region see Perrin.

In 1849 daughter Mary married William Perrin, a Littlebury man, presumably well known to her family. Mary was aged 18 when she married William, who was aged 21. Mary will continue her story as Mary Perrin.

Sometime before 1851 William and Amelia moved back to live in Littlebury. In 1851 they were living at Bakers Yard, with William still a farm labourer. Living with them at the time were sons Issac and James, also farm labourers. In total William and Amelia had at least five children and they were Ann b1818, Daniel b1821, Issac b1825, Mary b1830 and James b1834.
